Clearing the Dutch Variety Register of Field Crops (deletions from the National List)

14 april 2015

The marketing of plant reproductive material of agricultural varieties is based on the listing of the variety in one of the EU Member States and on the subsequent addition to the EU Common Catalogue.
These varieties are included in the Dutch Variety Register on the basis of a decision taken by the Plant Variety Board. For a deletion of varieties from the Dutch National List, the Plant Variety Board depends on information supplied by the maintainers. As there are no annual fees charged in the Dutch System, there is no incentive to withdraw varieties from the National List once the variety has been listed. Responses to requests for (reference) samples sometimes reveal that varieties, which are still listed, actually do not exist anymore.

In order to keep the Variety Register updated, a summary of varieties listed in the Netherlands will be distributed to each company concerned once every 10 years from now on. We checked with our colleagues of NAK which varieties are currently included in the Dutch certification scheme. Over the past few months we made an inventory of varieties that should be deleted as they are no longer maintained. For the time being we focused on seed-propagated varieties. Potatoes will follow soon.

We would like to draw your attention to the result of this inventory which was published in the Dutch Gazette in March 2015. Without any response from the old or new maintainers the varieties published in this Gazette will be deleted from the Dutch National List after three months from now. A complete survey of the varieties on the Dutch National List is available in the Dutch Variety Register.
