Change botanical name tomato crop
As of March 31, a change in the botanical name for the specie tomato as specified in EU directive 2013/45 will be applicable.
In the EU directive 2013/45 it has been stated that the botanical name of the species tomato will have to be mentioned as from the 31st of March 2014 as 'Solanum lycopersicum L.' on packages of seed samples, orders, plant passports etc.
To avoid difficulties in the international marketing, the possibility exists temporarily both the 'new' botanical name 'Solanum lycopersicum L.' and also the 'old' botanical name 'Lycopersicon esculentum Mill' on labels and documents.
The mentioning of botanical names of tomato rootstocks is excluded from the EU directive 2013/45.
However, it is possible to take into account also for these botanical names, the mentioning of both the new and old botanical name of tomato.
This in order to avoid possible difficulties in the international marketing.
